N.E.mation 6! YOU ARE THE TOP 10!
The final reveal of the TOP 10 teams for N.E.mation 6! From Fathers to Sons!!!
On 10th of September 2011 at Nanyang Polytechnic, it was the day where the top 10 is revealed for N.E.mation 6! Buzzing with excitement, the whole lecture theatre was filled with students who cannot bottle up their eagerness and nervousness to know the final results. They had worked so hard on this for so long and that was their final judgement day.
This group of students have been the most enthusiastic and energetic bunch of secondary and junior college students that I have ever seen in a competition. In my mind, the only thing I can think of was, “Wow, they really inspires people.”
No matter what these top 20 teams were thinking, I personally felt that they are all equally awesome and truly inspiring to work so hard till this stage, irregardless of being in the top 10 or not. You cannot imagine how proud I felt when each time the judges reveal the result for the teams that make it through and how sad I felt at the same time for the teams that look so disappointed. Believe me, nobody likes to lose but I trust the teams which didn’t make it through this time will emerge as stronger winners the next. Strive for the best and do what you can to earn this cool experience in N.E.mation journey with so many like-minded friends.
For the least, their friendships in my eyes are much more precious than whether or not they are in the top 10.
Congratulations to the TOP 10 TEAMS once again!
You guys should be so so so so proud of yourselves! *applaud loudly for everyone of you*

N.E.mation 6! Top 20 workshop
On Wednesday (7th September 2011), the newly announced Top 20 teams of N.E.mation 6 were brought together for an interesting workshop. Split into 2, each sections went through amazing tutorials about Stop-Motion and 2D Digital Painting. BOTH ARE MY FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO!!!!
Out of topic: As you can see, I do posts my art works on my blog every now and then and most of it are 2D digital painting. If you are interested in it, you can view it here.
So… Apparently I missed out a lot on this Top 20 workshop which is my favourite part of the whole ambassador contest due to reasons. But anyway, I am so excited to look at these photos and figure out how fun it was for the students that day!
They were introduced to the ancient animation device called “Zoetrope”, if I was not wrong. Some background information about Zoetrope: it is one of the earliest device that creates the illusion of moving images, which is what we called “animation” now. As quoted from Wikipedia, “The term zoetrope is from the Greek words “zoe”, “life” and τρόπος – tropos, “turn”.”
The principle of zoetrope is fairly simple, you draw various images of different actions, put them into zoetrope and turn it as fast as you can. You will get something like this…
This video doesn’t exactly show you the REAL zoetrope but nonetheless, you get the idea of how “illusion of moving images” works right? *grins* The history of it might be boring but you might be surprised how cool it will be when you start working on these stuff. I personally would love to try for once!

Animation has never been an easy portion for me, I suck at it but I love watching it. There’s different kinds of animation, eg. stop-motion, pixilation, claymation, featured animations like Shrek and etc.
One of the easiest and most fun to do is stop-motion, it is somewhat like the cut out animation that the students were taught on Wednesday. What’s so fun about it?
Because as long as you have an awesome idea and the right materials to use, you don’t have to care about the drag and follow through or the principals of animation blah blah blah to get your animation right.
It’s free and creative!

Fascinated yet? I am and I bet you guys are regretting why you didn’t join N.E.mation6! now. Hahahahaha. *think too much*
Check out the other ambassador finalists trying to make their very own cut out animation too. The product is damn cool and imagine what’s going to happen in the creative students’ animations! So excited to see it!
Here’s their awesome end product, which is also a little… sadistic. hahaha!

I would appreciate if you could vote for me as the N.E.mation6! Ambassador -> here. Send me to Dreamworks, please?
N.E.mation 6 Top 100 Briefing!
Congratulations to the top 100 teams who make it to the sixth season of N.E.mation! This year’s theme is fairly interesting, these teams would need to create an animation on National Service (NS): From Fathers to Sons.
Last Saturday (3rd September 2011), the top 100 gathered at Nanyang Polytechnic for their very first briefing and presentation skills workshop. Hyped and prepared, I sure hope that these 100 teams would make it through with a positive mind and creative ideas!
Ever wonder how guys go through the “tormenting” 2 years of National Service; what is going on in the army; what do they do during training; what is all these terms like BMT/OCS/SCS and etc.? At the end of the workshop, the cast of Every Singaporean Son told these teams about their very own experience during their Basic Military Training (BMT).
The students looked like they had fun playing the activities that Ms. Chi Pin Lay from OURF Consultancy LLP taught them about good presentation skills.
Games like throwing paper balls into a box could hype the students up and still let them know that “Having a goal is important”. Imagine that there’s no box in the room at all, where would you throw the paper ball? So, for the very first factor of giving a good presentation is to have a goal.
Next up: LUNCH TIME!
And if you thought it was going to be a normal boxed meal, you were WRONG! These kids were given packets of army ration like soup and biscuit that NS boys would eat during their field camps. The organizers are just plain creative but I am not sure whether the kids would like the preserved food for their lunch after such a long briefing or not. Haha. But anyway, I guess it was really an eyeopening experience for them to try it too.
The food wasn’t as bad as we thought/heard about. For the least, I find it alright and edible even though the thought of it being compressed and preserved with lots of chemicals did turn me off a little. Look at the students enjoying their meal. Special thanks to these girls (picture below) for letting me to take a photograph of them.

I love cheerful kids! hahahahaha! Apparently, their favourite snack is the blueberry and apple biscuit since everyone is holding it. Why didn’t they touch the soup that was given to them too? Let Sarah and Faizah (both are NE6 Ambassador finalists like me too) show you!
According to Sarah, the soup wasn’t as bad as it looks. I didn’t get to try it but I trust her since she was slurping the soup before we went back into the lecture theatre for second round of workshop.
The next few parts of the workshop were quite fun too. The shy students were just plain cute to shun the microphone that was shove to them. Some did especially well for the tongue twisters, I know Faizah and Sarah were very fluent with that. ![]()

A big applause for those teams who went up to the stage and test out their presentation skills and congrats for getting the limited edition book with Stephanie Sun, JJ Lin and various Singaporean artistes’ signatures. WOOHOO! You don’t know how badly I wanted that book but too bad, students come first! Great job guys!
Next presentation were by the cast of our local online hit series about NS, documenting “Every Singaporean Son” by Cyber Pioneer TV. Watch the first episode here:
SPAZZ! These NS boys were so cute and funny when they answered various questions from the students. You might be surprised what they have shared, it wasn’t what some of us imagined like.. oh~ NS-is-so-easy-blah-blah-blah.
I personally love the sharing session from the Every Singaporean Son, it was particularly interesting sharing that I think the students might put into good use in their own animation.

I wanna be N.E.mation Ambassador!
Why should I be an N.E.mation Ambassador?
- Art has been a big part of my life. From watching animations and films since childhood, to learning the skills in animation/visual effects/art in Ngee Ann Polytechnic and EggStory Digital Art School, I probably know more in this area and is definitely more passionate about this industry than others.
- As an aspiring artist in this entertainment industry, Dreamworks is absolutely somewhere I would love to work in! It’s like a dream for me. And now this is such a great chance for me to go there and experience their awesomeness in creating so many famous and intriguing featured animations!
- In my opinion, an N.E.mation ambassador’s job is to promote and represent the passion of the students for animation and as an art student in an animation myself, I am already an ambassador in my daily life!
“Dreamworks animation, in every respect, there is a creative hole for the greatest creative and artistic talent that we can find from every corner of the planet. Supporting that talent, inspiring that talent is what makes great stories. Great story makes great movie and that’s what we are trying to be about.”
– Jeffrey Katzenberg
How to not love their animations with so much passion and talent and imagination that we have not been to?
Now, since I am definitely disqualified to join the N.E.mation competition and win the trip to Dreamworks USA but I certainly have the change to go there with the winning team! I can totally imagine how excited we would be when the time comes!
Young and dynamic students from Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges and Millenia Institute who are passionate about animation, you guys have a great chance to showcase your talent! Registration is still opened for you till 14 August, so what are you waiting for? Join now before you regret! For more information: go to this link.
