Movie: Footloose (2011)
A remake from the 1984 version of Footloose and I personally prefer the 2011 version more. A little less dramatic, a little more logical story flow and a little more awesome dancing. Despite having less than 20% of the movie for dances, I really like how this film focus more on the story rather than making it into another theatrical musical.
At first, I thought it would be like Disney’s High School Musical. That kind that is PG; safe for kids; encounter some changes in life; overcome it; sing and dance together and then everyone lives happily ever after. This is for the 20th century era.
In the 1980s, which Footloose is based in, things were different. Dancing and “mind-corrupting” music (in this case, they are referring to Rock n Roll) were illegal in the small city because of an accident that causes 5 teenagers dead. The story revolves around Ren, the new kid in town & Ariel, the rebellious pastor’s daughter, who went through their emotional hurdles and connect with dancing.
I know I am bad at describing, but mind you… the girl is really crazy. I still don’t understand why she would do all those dangerous stuffs that could have killed her, even though those actions really made a strong impact on this film. Maybe it is because of her pastor father’s oppressive actions to control ALL the kids after her dead brother died in an accident after a dance party (*Spoiler: So glad that the father actually changed his thinking in the end! ^^).
I am not for/against any beliefs in gods but I really dislike it when people infuse their own interpretations in their religious beliefs and act as if they were the kind ones and they were the only ones who do the right things.
For your information, being kind doesn’t mean you have the rights to stop others from doing what they love to do. And you know what? Being acceptable of what others enjoyed doing with their burning passion is actually being kind.
By enjoying, I do not refer to drugs, binge drinking, smoking or whatsoever unhealthy and harmful actions because I do not believe anyone would do those like they do these out of passion. They were just tempted to do those to escape from their reality due to god knows what reasons… Stress? Peer pressure? To look cool? To fit in? Nay. Dream on, you are never going to be happy doing those.
Heh. Enough of the nagging and creepy philosophical of mine!
Overall, this movie is definitely worth watching. It might be a little cheesy at some point of time, you know… those Hollywood kind of flirting and kissing and whatsoever. But, we seldom see such intense and controversial films in Singapore so do enjoy it! Plus, you would get addicted to their soundtrack too. Here’s something to share~

1994, The Cranberries (Northern Ireland popular band) released an album named No Need to Argue and one of the most popular and politically-controversial song would be Zombie. A protest song made for the “endless” killing and war in Ireland (“in particular the killing of two children in an IRA bombing in Warrington England”, Wikipedia), which, during that time, faces numerous conflicts in Northern Ireland itself, named The Troubles.
Feel the pain in this lyrics. Feel sympathy for the unfeeling killings. Feel the agony of not being able to help. Feel the depression of thinking about wars.
Make love, not wars. Stop war! Love Life!
I wish the Northern Koreans, or even any authorities of any countries who are thinking of starting a war, could actually listen to this song, if they couldn’t even feel anything through this song and watch those numerous failed examples of wars and how wars cause EVERYONE lives more difficult including theirs. Peace is much more inexpensive and happy. Let’s just hope they listen.
